Protractor by Dr. Feickert  Alignment template for turntables 

I consider this one of the best and easiest-to-use templates for cartridge alignment. It serves me invaluably in my regular cartridge installation.

Dr. Feickert has revised and expanded the world-renowned Universal Protractor NG MKII. In addition to increased accuracy, simplified operation was a key focus of our efforts. Here, for the first time, the three most well-known geometries of Baerwald, Löfgren, and Stevenson are combined on a single template.

Theory
The fundamental geometric relationships for a scanning device based on a rotary tonearm were already discussed in publications by Baerwald and Löfgren in the first half of the 20th century. The result of these publications was that the ideal arrangement for a rotary tonearm of a given length is based on a cranked, built-in scanner that is guided over the record radius with a defined overhang. Thus, the scanner sweeps the record tangentially at exactly two points – the inner and outer zero crossings. In the early 1960s, another mathematician (Stevenson) revisited the topic and presented his results.

First, determine which geometry you want to adjust: Baerwald (B), Löfgren (L), or Stevenson (S).

Screw the ruler onto the template and place the template on the turntable. Now align the ruler precisely with the tonearm pivot point. Move the stylus in the headshell so that the stylus tip exactly hits the corresponding crosshair (B, L, or S) at step 1 (overhang). If the travel is insufficient, check the correct mounting distance of the tonearm.

After the correct adjustment, slightly secure the stylus on one side so that it can still be turned by this one screw (offset adjustment). Set the anti-skating to zero.

 

 

 

  

At step 2, adjust the pickup's offset so that the needle carriage is aligned with the printed line when viewed from the front. This must be done at the corresponding point. For Baerwald adjustment, this is at B, for Löfgren adjustment, L, and for Stevenson adjustment, this is at S.

If the adjustment is correct, carefully tighten the screws alternately. Caution! Don't overtighten, because if you tighten too much, the pickup will also "loose" the position.

To check the adjustment, you can check the inner zero crossing in step 3. There, the needle carriage must be aligned with the line in a straight line, just as with the outer zero crossing. Alternatively, you can also check the overhang point (step 1) again. By linking the individual points, the third point is automatically correct if the other two are adjusted correctly. If this is not the case, either the offset or the overhang has been adjusted. Repeat the steps indicated.
